A soap with persimmon polyphenols significantly reduced nonenal on the body

Twenty men washed daily for four weeks with a soap containing a polyphenol complex drawn from oolong tea, tiencha, green tea and astringent persimmon. The amount of 2-nonenal coming off the body fell significantly. Measured odour intensity and the men's own scores both improved.

This is the closest thing that exists to a human trial of the idea.

Nonenal appears in body odour from about age 40, and it comes from oxidised skin oil

The paper that named the compound. It was found in subjects aged 40 and over and not in the younger group. Omega-7 fatty acids and lipid peroxides on the skin both rose with age, and both tracked how much a person produced.

In testing, 2-nonenal appeared only when those fatty acids were broken down by oxidation. That single result is why this is a chemistry problem and not a washing problem.

Persimmon tannin grabs odour molecules, and it is much better at some than others

Tannin isolated from fermented green persimmon juice was tested against ammonia, acetic acid, isovaleric acid, trimethylamine and indole. How well it held on varied by compound, and was significantly high for isovaleric acid and trimethylamine.

Isovaleric acid is the one behind foot odour, which is why this bar tends to do something useful there too.

The industrial use is old and documented. The chemistry was written down later.

Fermented unripe persimmon juice has been brushed onto nets, paper, timber and workwear in Japan for roughly eight centuries. The deodorising use entered the European patent record in 1984, seventeen years before anyone named the compound it works on.

A related patent found persimmon leaf extract alone did little, and only helped when combined with fruit juice. Persimmon on a label is not one ingredient.

When Japanese researchers ran the tests, they only found 2-nonenal in people aged 40 and over.
